“My future’s been planned for me for as long as I can remember, but I’ve never felt this alive until I met you.”

"I shouldn't want Carter, but I can't get him out of my mind."

Luke Bailey doesn't have time for a boyfriend. Between dog-walking, law school applications, and trying to get his music career off the ground, love doesn't stand a chance. Besides, his new customer's straight as they come, right? So why can't he stop thinking about Carter?

"I've never been with a guy. Why do I want Luke so bad?"

Carter Welling just needs a dog-walker. Big league hockey takes him away from home, and he can't take Puck everywhere he goes. What he doesn't need is a hot dog-walker who makes him think weird things about guys that he's never felt before.

"Fate brought us together. Can I afford to take the risk?"

Something just keeps pulling them back together, though, and it's not just the cuteness of Carter's dog. When Luke's dreams and Carter's hockey career seem to be splitting them apart, can they admit that what they want—no, need—is each other?

Playing With Fate is a standalone gay romance novel with no cheating, no cliffhangers, and a HEA.

Playing With Fate Admirals Hockey Book 1 edition by Ava Thorpe Literature Fiction eBooks

I love me a good hockey romance (and I don't even watch hockey!) Playing With Fate was really good. I enjoyed it. It was a quick read (certainly not as long as an average book). I liked that it wasn’t instalove, but rather instafriendship. So much better to see a relationship evolve than to have one thrust in our faces. Both MCs were sweet, and the sexytimes were really hot. I tend to stay away from books with pets and children (when they are involved, the MCs are usually too saccharine for my taste). But Puck was a good character and his presence didn't render the MCs too syrupy.

I thought Carter was pretty nonchalant about realizing he was gay (or bi). I think Luke and the rest of us were expecting a big freak out (which would have been more realistic, but I guess Thorpe didn’t want to make the book longer or angsty). His easy acceptance didn’t feel authentic. One of the MCs does suffer from that ubiquitous plot point of seeing/hearing/reading something benign and completely misinterpreting it and then not asking about it for some unknown reason. Fortunately, he pulls his head out of his a$$ fairly quickly. The angst it causes is short lived.

It all wraps up a bit too perfectly. Everyone is happy and accepting, and life is filled with rainbows and kittens. That’s actually what kept me from giving this book a 5 star review. That perfect ending was too pat, too easy, and not terribly realistic. It was like a Hallmark movie.

There were a few awkward words and tense changes, but it might be because the author is Canadian and it’s a style difference. The writing and editing was pretty clean.

ETA: what was with the "sneak peek"? It was totally unnecessary. It wasn't a prologue. It was just a few pages plucked out of the middle of the book and plopped at the front. Why? It was more confusing than anything. We KNOW the MCs are going to get together. We KNOW they are going to have sexytimes. We don't need it spelled out for us like we don't know what we're about to read. Weird choice.

Playing With Fate Admirals Hockey Book 1 edition by Ava Thorpe Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Carter is 22 and just beginning to play professional hockey, but he's a bit insecure about his place on the team. Carter has a cute lab named Puck which leads him to meeting Luke, his dog walker who he's starting to have romantic feeling's for. But Carter is straight... Right?

Luke is a college student studying music but intends on going into law which is not his first choice. But his father and grandfather and his great grandfather and so forth have all been lawyer's and his father expects him to follow the tradition. But Luke loves music. His has dreams of teaching it. While being a college student he also has a job as a dog walker. This is where he meets the sexy owner of Puck, Carter. He's attracted to Carter but knows nothing could ever come of the attraction because Carter is straight... Right?

Not so much it seems when him and Carter share a kiss. But Carter has mild freak out and asks Luke to leave. But it is short lived and the guys slowly start building a relationship.

I liked both MC's and they definitely had the connection and chemistry any good book needs. I guess my only issues were that is was a bit cheesy and predictable for me. Plus everything I wanted to read about happened off page. Like them going out to dinner or a walk. Anything that happened outside of that condo was something I wanted to read about but it was all left off. So that was disappointing. But there was also pluses. It was low on angst, there wasn't any insta love, and the relationship happened at a good speed. The sex didn't happen ASAP. There was definitely intimate sexy times, but the actual sex didn't happen until later in the book and it felt like that is when it should have happened. So the book had a good speed on how everything went.

This book is for those who want something easy and cheesy. LOL

Happy reading dolls! xx
I really liked this book. The pace was good, the character development was good and it left me feeling good. I look forward to her next book.
OMG this book was so good! I loved Luke and Carter (a hot hockey player? yes, please!). This book hit all the right buttons for me - so sweet and just the right amount of steam. I highly recommend this book, and I can't wait for book 2! More hockey!
I really enjoyed Luke and Carter. I love a good hockey player romance. The book was well written and I loved how she took the guys through challenges they had to deal with and overcome. Both guys had insecurities that they dealt with and I loved this read.
Ahhhhhhhh! I just loved this book <3 Admittedly, I wanted to shake some sense into Carter multiple times, but he was still sweet af, and Luke was adorbs. I smiled my way through the whole thing... some steamy action to keep things interested, and some genuine sweetness - the best of what romance should be. Plus, it's "Book One" ... so now I'm excited to see who's in store next! (Ash, please?)
I struggled whether to give this book three or four stars. In the end I decided on four because this was a first time author who wrote an engaging and enjoyable m/m sport romance and I think has much promise. The writing was good, the editing polished. The main characters were likeable and the chemistry between them was excellent. Ok, now for the bit that I didn't like the ending seemed rushed. It felt like the publisher had said, "you must stick to x number of pages and don't go over" and this forced the author to end the story with a sappy overly saccharine ending where everybody likes each other, there is no conflict and no issues with a professional hockey player openly displaying affection to his male partner. Despite this, I will happily read the next book from this author if I am going to get the writing from the other 95% of the book. A recommended m/m sports romance.
